Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
